AI Visibility Benchmark 2026

How often brands actually appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews — and what predicts whether you will.

<15%

The median AI mention rate across the brands measured — on questions where the brand would reasonably be a relevant answer. Search visibility no longer tells you whether your market can find you.

Findings

What the data shows

Most brands are invisible to AI search

Across the brands measured, the median mention rate in AI answer engines was below 15% on questions where the brand would reasonably be a relevant answer. Search visibility (the old metric) tells you nothing about this.

Visibility is earned by publishing, not by authority

The strongest predictor of AI mentions was not domain authority or backlinks — it was the volume of original, structured, citable content. Brands that publish answer-first content appeared; brands that did not, did not.

Traditional SEO does not transfer cleanly

Several brands with strong Google rankings had near-zero AI visibility. AI engines reward a different shape of content: explicit, declarative, structured, and quotable — not keyword-optimized prose.

Structured data and llms.txt correlate with mentions

Brands with FAQ and defined-term schema, plus an llms.txt file, showed measurably higher mention rates than peers of comparable size. The sample is small but directional.

The thesis

A new measurement category

For two decades, marketing measured itself against search visibility — rankings, impressions, clicks. That metric still exists, but it now describes only part of how your market finds you. Increasingly, the answer a buyer receives comes from an AI engine, and whether your brand appears in that answer is not predicted by your Google ranking.

AI Visibility is the new measurement category: how often your brand appears as a named, relevant answer in the engines your market actually asks. This benchmark is a first attempt to put numbers around it.

The finding that matters most is also the simplest: visibility is earned by publishing. Brands that produce original, structured, citable content appear. Brands that do not, do not — regardless of how well-known they are.

Methodology

How this was measured

1

Each brand tested against 20 questions across four AI answer engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini.

2

A mention is counted when the brand appears as a named, relevant answer — not as a passing citation.

3

Baseline captured in July 2026; re-measured monthly to track the trajectory of AI visibility over time.

4

Findings are directional rather than statistically conclusive — intended to frame a new measurement category, not to rank brands.
